Clay Court Construction

Although it’s referred to as clay, HAR-TRU is actually composed of crushed stone. It’s more durable and consistent than it’s European clay court counterparts. It is a natural green stone that is extremely hard and angular, two important qualities when it comes to tennis court construction. The angularity helps the stone particles lock together to form a stable playing surface. The natural green color is classically clay and instantly recognizable.

Let the experts at Premier Surface Solutions provide you with a top-quality tennis court with our HAR-TRU construction. The installation of HAR-TRU is simple and cost efficient, allowing anyone to have the high-quality tennis court they have always wanted. Choosing a HAR-TRU court over any other type of clay tennis court will provide you with a functional court for many years to come.

Easy Installation

The experts at Premier Surface Solutions follow a distinct method to provide you with the highest quality HAR-TRU constructions around. We have been using our method for years, and it has proven very successful through the numerous testimonies we have obtained. Starting with our exclusive laser system, we get the ground ready for installation. Our professionals then install a concrete curb around the exterior of the court, an above-ground or underground irrigation system and a layer of crushed concrete. The final step is a layer of HAR-TRU, which is evenly installed for a gorgeous, smooth tennis court.

HAR-TRU – Construction that Will Last!

When you choose Premier Surface Solutions for your HAR-TRU constructions, you will obtain a tennis court that remains free from the normal wear and tear a tennis court goes through year after year. With minimal buckling, bumps and cracks, choosing HAR-TRU for your tennis court surface is a cost-efficient choice for anyone. The minimal need for maintenance down the road makes it affordable and time efficient to have a tennis court that stands up to the toughest industry standards.

Hard Court

[intense_image image=”134″ title=”hardcourt-e1389292671910-1″ linkurl_target=”_blank” shadow=”14″]These types of courts are commonly found at public parks, schools, apartments, and private residences. They are most commonly made of asphalt or concrete.

Hard courts, unlike clay (Har-Tru) courts, can be customized to the customer preferred color(s) and speed. Additional games can be lined on the court surface, such as volleyball, basketball, etc. Both asphalt and concrete type of courts can be tailored to have the same amenities, the only difference is in their core construction.

The American Sports Builders Association recommends that an asphalt tennis court is 4″+ of compacted base material and 1 1/2″ of asphalt, followed by an acrylic color coating system (for non-freeze thaw climates). In freeze thaw climates the compacted base should be 6″+ and the asphalt should be 3″+. Typical concrete courts are four inches thick followed by a similar acrylic color coating system. An option to consider for either hard court is a cushioning system.

Cushioned Court Construction

cushioned_court-300x194If you have ever looked at a tennis court, it may appear to be a simple piece of asphalt or cement that is painted with lines to create a court for playing tennis. However, the court isn’t always what it seems. When you choose to install a tennis court at your home or another location, the Premier Surface Solutions professionals can show you exactly what a difference a cushioned asphalt tennis court can make to your performance and the durability of the court.

When we begin the construction of a cushioned asphalt tennis court, we start by placing a layer of asphalt on the ground, covered by a layer of acrylic. While this would be the end of court construction for some companies, we follow up with the cushioning layers for a better playing surface. In many cases, we will add an additional two layers of cushioning. The bottom layer of cushioning will consist of five to nine applications of rubberized cushioning. Once this layer is complete, we follow up with two to three coats of heavy-grade rubberized granules and then three to six coats of fine-grade granules. We then apply the acrylic paint you see on every tennis court.

Benefits:
The cushioned asphalt tennis court, which is the same type of court used for the US Open, provides a vast array of benefits to players. The cushioning helps protect the players from injury due to the jarring motion of running or falling. While the cost of the construction of this type of court adds between $5,000 and $11,000 to the cost your court project, you will find the extra cost makes up for not having to resurface your court as often because of the increased durability the cushioning provides.

See below for generic tennis court layout options (including 36′ and 60′ courts) and additional information.

Court Color Options

One detail to consider is the inner court and outer court colors of your new court. Premier Surface Solution’s tennis court surfaces are available in a wide selection of vibrant and durable colors.

Tennis Court Resurfacing and Repair

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some commonly asked questions we hear regarding tennis court resurfacing and repair.  These address most of the questions people have with construction, repair, and resurfacing but if you have another question not listed, please send us an email with your question and we’d be happy to answer it for you.

How much does it cost to resurface a tennis court?

The average cost to resurface a tennis court usually ranges from $4000 to $8000, depending on a variety of factors. Prior to resurfacing a tennis court, we will perform a site visit and look for problems or issues that may need to be addressed prior to or during the resurfacing process. Common problems to remedy prior to resurfacing may be drainage issues, asphalt or concrete repair (crack repair, leveling or low spot repair), peeling and more. Hard/Acrylic tennis courts should be resurfaced every 4 to 8 years, depending on usage and other maintenance habits. If an existing tennis court has not been cleaned, properly maintained, or resurfaced on a regular basis, the cost to resurface will likely be higher. If this is the case, additional cleaning like mold, moss, and fungus removal may have to be performed.

This can take extra time, equipment, chemicals, which of course mean a higher cost. There are multiple options when it comes to crack repair and crack filling. Acrylic crack fillers are the lower cost option which can provide temporary closure and repair of the cracks. Other higher cost methods for crack repair consist of specialty membrane systems, fiberglass reinforcement, or asphalt and concrete patching. Many asphalt courts develop low spots, birdbaths, or areas that hold water and do not drain properly. Birdbath patching takes extra time, expertise, and acrylic patching materials. This can definitely add to the cost of repairing and resurfacing a tennis court. There are other factors to consider when resurfacing a tennis court. Luckily, these are under the court owner’s control:

• Premium color options: Tournament Purple, Orange, etc.

• Adding cushion layers and creating a cushioned tennis court surface

• Applying additional color coats or SportWax Clear Coat for additional wear

• Selecting specific factory-mixed tennis court coatings to achieve ITF certified paces or speed of play (Slow, Medium-Slow, Medium, Medium-Fast, Fast)

• Having the tennis court contractor add blended lines for multiple sports (Kids Tennis, Pickleball, Basketball, and more)

These are just some guidelines to consider. If you would like to get a detailed cost estimate from Premier Surface Solutions, and find out your cost to resurface your tennis court, please contact us. Our estimates are free with no obligation to buy.

What causes streaking on a tennis court surface?

court_streaks-300x300There are many variables that may contribute to streaks and splotches on a tennis court surface. Excessive streaking, in most cases, is from over dilution of the color coating materials. There is an acceptable range of dilution stated on the specification sheets and labels, depending on pavement temperatures. Make sure not to exceed this range, and if needed, wait until cooler periods to apply your next coat. Morning is ideal for application during very hot days. If the ambient temperatures are above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, it may be st to schedule applications during the morning.

Another helpful procedure to minimize streaking, on hot days, is to mist the surface approximately 3 to 5 feet ahead of the squeegee applicator. This helps to drop the surface temperature, minimize coating shock, and slow evaporation of the water (vehicle) in the coatings. The surface can be slightly damp during application of the Acrylic Resurfacer and color coatings, but make sure not to create any puddles.

Other basic items that can contribute to streaks on the surface are:

• Using the incorrect tool/squeegee for application.
– A sport squeegee with 50-60 durometer softness of rubber is ideal for application of acrylic sport surfaces. Rubber blades that are softer can wipe the material off and harder (stiffer) rubber blades can drag the sand through and create more visible streaks.

• Not using the correct sand in the tennis court surface (color coatings).
– Rounded sand is recommended in the colored surface coatings. Angular cut sand drags under the application squeegee blade, where rounded sands will “roll” and minimize visible streaking left on the color coating surfaces. Never use “playground” sand. It usually contains small stones and/or dusty sand.

• Utilizing the wrong pouring technique.
– Pour marks can appear on the surface, even from earlier coats. This can happen when the coatings are poured directly onto the surface and not into an existing puddle. The surface can appear splotchy or even streaky, and highlight each pass of the squeegee.

Why do white lines crack on a tennis court?

white_line_crackThis is basically created by the expansion and contraction of the asphalt at different rates. The white lines, with their bright color, exhibit high reflectivity of the sun’s rays. This results in cooler asphalt and minimal expansion under the lines. The adjacent playing surfaces have darker surface colors, which absorb more heat from the bright sun. In contrast, this tends to soften the asphalt binder and cause expansion. Over time, this back and forth movement can lead to cracks in the asphalt (which loses flexibility and becomes more brittle as it ages).

Once cracks open up in the asphalt tennis court surface, the exposed asphalt begins to shrink and water intrusion can exacerbate the problem and increase the size of the crack at a quicker rate. Water settles into the stone base and wreaks havoc, especially in “freeze-thaw” regions. The additional expansion and contraction in the base will speed up degradation and the cracks continue to grow.

How can this problem be minimized? Lighter tennis court surface colors can minimize the effect so that there is not such a big temperature contrast from the white line to the surface. At minimum, make sure to keep the cracks sealed with an acrylic tennis court crack filler. This will help to maintain the crack and slow down the growth to provide better safety and aesthetics.

Asphalt Basketball Court

Hot mix asphalt spread and compacted with a uniform density and thickness on top of a sub-base. This is probably the most common tennis court in our area. Asphalt, while softer among hard courts, is not crack resistant and undulations do occur.

Concrete Basketball Court

Post-tensioned concrete is an advanced construction technique that is crack resistant. It is highly recommended and is the preferred method of concrete court construction in order to keep maintenance costs low.
All hard courts are finished with an Acrylic Color System in order to achieve uniform texture, speed of play, durability, proper drainage, and color.

Cushioned Basketball Court

A cushioned surface for basketball or multi-purpose courts is the ultimate in providing optimum performance and player comfort.
